Behaviour For Learning (BFL)

Behaviour for Learning (BFL) Supports

At Coláiste Éinde, our Behaviour for Learning (BFL) framework is central to how we support students in overcoming barriers to learning, particularly in the area of behaviour, emotional regulation, and engagement with school life. These supports are informed by the NCSE’s Continuum of Support, ensuring that all interventions are student-centred and needs-led.

We use the Continuum of Support developed by the National Council for Special Education (NCSE) to plan, monitor, and review the supports we provide to students. This model operates across three levels:

Level 1: Support for All

This universal level promotes positive behaviour and engagement across the whole school. It includes:

  • Positive Behaviour Strategy Team (PBST) – A team of staff reviewing behaviour trends and implementing proactive responses.
  • Whole-School Initiative: "Be Ready" – Reinforcing expectations of being ready, respectful and responsible.
  • Reward systems and recognition
  • Teacher training in inclusive strategies

Level 2: Support for Some

This targeted level is for students who require additional support to meet behavioural or emotional goals. Examples include:

Check & Connect – One-to-one support building positive relationships and promoting school engagement.

Working Things Out – Helping students develop coping strategies, emotional regulation, and problem-solving skills.

Mentoring – Regular sessions with a trusted staff mentor to support goal-setting, motivation and personal development.

Level 3: Support for a Few

This individualised level provides intensive support for students with significant or ongoing needs. Interventions include:

  • Behaviour Support Plans
  • Individualised mentoring and coaching
  • Collaboration with outside agencies (e.g., NEPS, CAMHS, NCSE advisors)
  • Restorative interventions

Additional Supports

  • Pastoral Care and SEN Teams: Cross-collaborative planning for individualised support
  • Student Support Files: Used at Levels 2 and 3 to track interventions and progress
  • Parent Engagement: Regular updates, check-ins, and collaborative planning
