An Réalt

An Réalt

Coláiste Éinde has provision for three special classes that cater specifically for students with ASD. Each class has a maximum capacity of six students, in line with Department of Education guidelines. These class groups are known as An Réalt.

An Réalt provides a supportive, structured, and inclusive learning environment for students with Autism (see Admissions Policy). The centre aims to promote the holistic development of each student, enabling them to achieve their full potential academically, socially, and personally, while participating in the wider life of the school where appropriate.

Students enrolled in An Réalt access teaching and learning tailored to their individual strengths and needs, under dual enrolment in both the special class and mainstream school. They may follow either the Level 2 Learning Programme (L2LP), the Level 3 Junior Cycle Programme, or both, depending on their abilities, educational profile, strengths and areas of interest. Each An Réalt student’s bespoke timetable responds to their needs and adapts dynamically with those changing needs. Clear communication is fostered between school staff and parent(s)/guardian(s), to ensure that the academic, social, and emotional needs of their child are being identified and supported.

The Level 2 Learning Programme focuses on the development of personal, social, and practical skills to support students in becoming as independent and confident as possible. Learning in the L2LP is organised around five Priority Learning Units (PLUs):

  1. Communicating and Literacy – developing communication skills for personal, social, and community life.

  2. Numeracy – applying mathematical understanding in real-life contexts.

  3. Personal Care – promoting independence in managing personal needs and wellbeing.

  4. Living in a Community – fostering participation, responsibility, and engagement within the community.

  5. Preparing for Work – building skills, attitudes, and understanding to support progression towards future education, training, and employment opportunities.

Students following the traditional Level 3 Junior Cycle programme engage in a broad, balanced curriculum with access to a combination of mainstream lessons and supported learning environments in An Réalt, as appropriate to their needs.

Admission to a special class for students with ASD must be approved by the Special Educational Needs Organiser (SENO), in consultation with the school authorities, who determine the teaching allocation and resources for the ASD Centre in accordance with Department of Education policy. The application for students seeking to enrol in 1st-Year must be made to the NCSE before October 1st. Supporting documentation must be provided to the school as part of the regular admissions process.

At Coláiste Éinde, inclusion is at the heart of school life. The staff of An Réalt work closely with class teachers, Special Needs Assistants, parents, and external professionals to ensure each student is supported to reach their individual goals. The centre provides access to sensory and quiet spaces, structured teaching approaches, and social learning opportunities designed to help students develop confidence, communication, and independence. Through a caring and collaborative ethos, An Réalt strives to empower every student to thrive both within the centre and as valued members of the wider school community.
